3D device structures are created by a number of consecutive masking and etching or deposition steps. Once the desired device features have been identified a suitable process flow is designed.
In a reverse engineering process the structure is split up in sub-parts; each of which can be fabricated either by one etching or one deposition step. By adding all the deposition and etching steps together, a process sequence for the device emerges.
